Fields: Media Types

Path: Assets > Configure Asset Management > Media Types

The Media Types page lets you manage the media types that are defined for files attached to digital assets. You can add new media types, or edit or delete existing media types.

A digital asset may have a file attached to it. The file can be almost any type of multimedia, such as a video clip, an image, or an audio recording.

A number of pre-defined media types are delivered with Portfolio; users may create and manage additional media types for their library’s use with the Media Types page. (For a list of delivered media types, see Delivered media types.)

When an asset with an attached file is added to the digital asset hierarchy, the file’s extension is checked to determine which defined media type, if any, matches the file extension. If the file extension matches that of a defined media type, the asset will display the assigned media type icon with the asset in a search results list. If the patron views the asset in detail, the attached file is displayed, downloaded, or played, as determined by the media type definition.

In the Media Types page, you can sort the Media Types List by clicking the column heading of the information by which you want to sort. (For example, click the "Name" column to sort the Media Type List by name.) When you click the column heading the first time, the software sorts the information in the Media Type List in ascending order by the column heading. If you click the column heading a second time, the software sorts information in the Media Type List in descending order by the column heading. When you click a column heading, the software displays a sort arrow to the right of the column name that indicates whether the data is being sorted in ascending or descending order.
